4.5.1 Background

Remaining in tune with the rich diversity of natural ecosystems is essential for L'Oréal. The Group’s supply and innovation strategy covers more than 1,500 raw materials sourced from 350 botanical species grown in more than 100 countries.

L'Oréal recognises the urgent need to preserve and restore biodiversity. It therefore structures its activities by applying the conservation hierarchy (Avoid, Minimise, Restore and Rehabilitate, and Offset), with the ambition of transforming the Group-wide systems that support its value chain.

In concrete terms, as part of its L’Oréal for the Future programme, the Group has defined biodiversity ambitions for 2030 which aim to:

  • sustainably source at least 90% of biobased materials used in formulas and packaging;
  • source over 75% of ingredients from nature(1) or from recycled materials in formulas;
  • regenerate more land than the Group’s footprint to enhance the health and resilience of priority ecosystems.
